Morocco in 7 Days: The Sahara in a Week from Marrakech
A week is enough to reach the Sahara from Marrakech, as long as the route is planned well. You start with two nights in the Red City and a private guide for its palaces, madrasas and souks. Then you cross the High Atlas by the Tizi n’Tichka pass to Ait Benhaddou, sleep in the palm grove of Skoura, and follow the Dades Valley and the Todra Gorge to Merzouga, where a camel carries you into the dunes of Erg Chebbi for a night at a desert camp.
The 560 kilometers to the dunes are split into easy stages. You sleep in Skoura on the way out and again on the way back, at the same kasbah hotel, so you can leave your large bags there and take only an overnight bag to the camp. A last night in Marrakech closes the week gently. Depending on the package you choose, you stay in high-end 4-star and 5-star hotels and riads, in boutique 5-star riads, or in the finest properties at each stop, with a luxury camp in the dunes.
