Where you sleep in Jordan shapes the trip more than people expect. A hotel next to the gate at Petra lets you see the site before the buses. A night in the desert gives you a sky you will not see in a city. And a day at the Dead Sea is the best medicine for tired legs.

Here are eight places we would stay in Amman, Petra, the Dead Sea and Wadi Rum, with a note on who each suits. This is a short list, not a ranking. If you are choosing between two, start with the area, then the room.

1. Four Seasons Hotel Amman

A hilltop hotel with the polish you would expect from the brand and a spa that uses Dead Sea ingredients. It holds a Forbes five-star rating, which makes it the safe, comfortable choice for a first night in Jordan after a long flight.

Best suited to: couples and families who want a calm, high-service base in Amman at the start or end of the trip.

2. The St. Regis Amman

Set in Abdoun, one of the leafier residential areas of Amman, with butler service for every room and a restaurant, Segreta, tucked into a garden. It is a good fit if you like the idea of a hotel that looks after the small things for you.

Best suited to: guests who value personal service and a quiet neighbourhood over being next to the old town.

3. Fairmont Amman

Also in Abdoun, and a little more relaxed in feel than the others. The standout is an indoor pool filled with Dead Sea water, which is handy if you are not heading to the shore on this trip, plus the Willow Stream Spa.

Best suited to: a stay built around spa time, or travellers who want a taste of the Dead Sea without leaving the city.

4. Petra Marriott Hotel

A clifftop hotel in Wadi Musa, the town beside Petra, with views over the Petra mountains and a Turkish bath that is very welcome after a day on your feet. It is a comfortable, full-service base rather than a boutique one.

Best suited to: guests who want good facilities and an easy evening after Petra.

5. Old Village Resort Petra

Rooms are built in a village style with stone and mud walls, and many have terraces that face the Petra mountains. The feel is more traditional and a touch more romantic than the larger international hotels.

Best suited to: couples looking for local character in the architecture and a quieter evening.

6. Mövenpick Resort Petra

This resort stands right beside the entrance to the archaeological site. That one fact can make the difference to your day, because you can be at the Siq before the crowds arrive and walk back for a rest in the middle of the day.

Best suited to: anyone who wants to see Petra at its quietest, or who has mobility concerns and wants to keep walking to a minimum before and after the visit.

7. Hilton Dead Sea Resort & Spa

A beach-side resort with direct access to the shore and a heated pool, which is useful in winter. The Dead Sea hotels sit along a short stretch of coast, so views and facilities matter more than location. You may also want to compare the Kempinski Ishtar and the Mövenpick Resort & Spa Dead Sea on the same shore.

Best suited to: one or two nights of rest after Petra or Wadi Rum.

8. Luxury camps in Wadi Rum

Wadi Rum has no grand hotels, and that is the point. Camps listed in the luxury category, such as Memories Aicha, offer proper beds, private bathrooms and a Bedouin dinner. Before you book a camp, ask five questions: is the bathroom private, is there heating or cooling, how many people are in the camp, how far is it from the village, and what is included in the excursion?

Best suited to: one night in the desert, with a sunset 4×4 outing and a zarb dinner.

Choose your base at a glance

For Amman: Four Seasons if you want comfort in the heart of the city, St. Regis for personal service, Fairmont for spa time.

For Petra: Mövenpick if getting to the site before the crowds is your priority, Petra Marriott if you want views and a bath after the day, Old Village if you like character.

For the Dead Sea and the desert: a one-night stay at each is plenty. Do the Dead Sea after Petra and Wadi Rum, when your legs will thank you.

Plan three nights in Amman and the north, two in Petra, one at the Dead Sea and one in Wadi Rum for an eight-day trip. Our guide to the places to visit in Jordan shows what to do from each base, and our guide to food in Jordan explains what to eat while you are there.

We do not name hotels on our tour pages, because we match properties to your dates, budget and room type. If one of the places above catches your eye, tell us and we will check availability for the category you want. Rooms and facilities change, so confirm the details before you book.
