Jordan’s historic sites, desert landscapes, and nature reserves offer several different styles of private journey. These seven places are a starting point for choosing a route. Before booking, check current official travel advice and local access conditions for your exact itinerary.
Petra

Allow enough time to explore beyond the first famous viewpoint. The site involves substantial walking, with uneven surfaces and steps on some routes. Discuss your interests, fitness, and desired pace with your guide. Confirm any evening event separately from daytime admission.
The Dead Sea

A Dead Sea stay can add a quieter stage between cultural visits. Choose the hotel for its access and facilities, and follow local instructions around the water. It is a different destination from Jordan’s Red Sea coast at Aqaba.
Wadi Rum

Explore the desert with an authorized local team and a route suited to the conditions. Compare camp facilities, private bathroom arrangements, heating or cooling, and vehicle excursions. Do not assume every camp category provides the same level of comfort.
Jerash

Jerash rewards a guided visit that explains its streets, public spaces, and surviving Roman architecture. Allow time for walking and pauses, especially in warm weather. Combine it with nearby stops only if the driving leaves enough time to enjoy the site.
Umm Qais

Umm Qais offers archaeology and wide landscape views in northern Jordan. Decide whether it fits naturally into your route rather than adding a long detour. Your guide can explain how the ancient site relates to the region’s wider history.
Madaba

Madaba is known for its mosaic heritage, including the historic map in St George’s Church. Check access for your visit and respect worshippers. It can work as a cultural stop on a route that also includes Amman or Mount Nebo.
Dana Biosphere Reserve

Dana offers a different experience from the cities and archaeological sites. Choose an appropriate guided walk, confirm terrain and duration, and carry what your guide recommends for the conditions. For more route ideas, see our Jordan travel guide.
Connect the highlights in a sensible sequence
Petra and Wadi Rum deserve their own time rather than being squeezed into a single sightseeing day. A quieter Dead Sea stage can provide a contrast to walking and desert outings. If northern sites interest you, allow dedicated time near Amman instead of adding them as long detours from the south.
Start with your must-see places and preferred walking pace, then choose the number of nights. A personal route can include archaeology, food, desert scenery, and hotel time in different proportions. The sample tour provides a framework; final visits and overnight stops depend on your dates, interests, and current local conditions.
